The Dorothy E. Katz Reading & Recreation Fund of Hopewell Valley

The Dorothy E. Katz Reading & Recreation Fund of Hopewell Valley was established in honor of Dorothy Katz, the mentor and heart of the Reading & Recreation camp.

The fund maintains the bridge Dorothy and her supporters have built, connecting people of the Hopewell Valley to the people of Trenton. For over 35 years Dorothy led that effort through R&R, a summer camp that provided a special opportunity for children from Trenton – a summer day camp that emphasized the joy of reading.

In 2006, The Dorothy E. Katz Reading and Recreation Fund of Hopewell Valley awarded its second grant to the Horses and Youth (HAY) summer camp program, a the Mercer County Equestrian Center in Pennington. The fund supports the camp for one week. Ten Trenton children will attend, immersing themselves in an experience that centers on horses: reading and writing about them, riding them and caring for them.

The outstanding success of the program came not only from the children’s bonding as they learned to care for each other and their horses, but also in continuing Dorothy’s longstanding goal of enriching children’s lives and bridging the communities of Trenton and Hopewell Valley.
