Princeton Area Community Foundation - Frank Clark Scholarship

The Greater Mercer Scholarship

The Greater Mercer Scholarship is made possible through the generosity of two Community Foundation scholarship funds that support students who have been active participants in their communities: The Frank Clark Memorial Fund and the Bethany Scholarship Fund.

Personal inspiration, encouragement and generosity were hallmarks of Frank Clark who lived and worked in the Princeton area for 55 years, leaving a legacy of community service. Most of his career was spent as Director of the Princeton YMCA. During that time he raised $5 million for construction of the YMCA-YWCA facility.

Mr. Clark also founded and directed the locally-broadcast radio show “Youth Speaks Up.” Begun in 1963, the weekly program gave teenagers the opportunity to voice opinions and interview adults. In 1979 he founded the Minorities Journalism Workshop to attract talented high school students to careers in newsrooms.

Mr. Clark will be remembered best for his abiding concern for young people and the extraordinary efforts he made on their behalf. He offered constant encouragement to students, and raised money to help 56 go on to four-year colleges. All he asked in return was that they “help someone else.” Following his death in 1995, the Frank Clark Memorial Fund was established as a way to honor and perpetuate his generosity and humanitarian spirit.

The Bethany Scholarship Fund was also established in 1995. It was created by a young couple while they were enrolled in a local graduate school program in Mercer County. They wished to provide scholarships for post-secondary education or training to ambitious students who have been active in their communities.

Award:

One scholarship will be awarded annually for one year of undergraduate study at a four-year college or university.

Eligibility:

The applicant must be a graduating high school senior who resides in Mercer County.
This is a competitive scholarship, and the recipient will be selected based on community service, financial need, achievement and character. It is very important that the student has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service over several years.

Submit the completed application and all required attachments to the Princeton Area Community Foundation at 15 Princess Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648 by May 1.
Award notification posted on Community Foundation website (www.pacf.org) on June 1.

The scholarship will be mailed directly to the institution where the student is enrolled on July 31.

Application form with Greater Mercer Scholarship checked in the box
Student Aid Report (SAR) generated by FAFSA
A copy of your college financial aid award letter
A copy of your college acceptance letter
A personal statement reflecting your community service record
Two letters of recommendation
High school transcript
